How to Improve Your Second Language Listening and Speaking with YouTube?

ABOUT THIS EPISODE

This post introduces ways of learning a foreign or second language using youtube. I share two of my favourite tools to improve listening and speaking.

In this podcast we are going to discusshow to improve your second language. Listening and speaking with you tube, you are listening to the INNOVAlanguages, show a podcast that inspires language learners to pursue theirdreams. My name is alone a university professor from the. U, I have overfifteen years, experience teaching poor languages in the UK T and I'm here toshare my passion for language learning, a helpen. It comes to improving our listening and speaking ina second language. Many people think about watching life, T V and radioprograms, and this can be fun and it definitely helps with training your ear. And, however, Iwould recommend that whenever you can...

...you listen to online videos and podcastwhenever possible, and ideally these videos and podcast should be recordedso that you have two major advantages. You have much more flexibility in terms of how to play and pause and replay the videosand audio. You also have greater choice. So basically it's listening andwatching in demand, so you can choose whatever topic that you enjoy listeningto or watching, and we all know that there are so manyresources online. These days, you can easily find a video that you like onyou tube tick, tock, instar videos, and you tube is probably my favorite. I goto Yutu for practically everything from...

...looking up recipes for a new dish tolearning how to fix my bike, an some of my favorite yout channelsfor language learning and R, for example. Tad talks, easy languages, andthese are all excellent resources to practice your listening and speaking inthe target language. So today I want to talk about easylanguages. First, easy languages for those of you who have never heard ofthis channel is a non profit project that helps people learn a secondlanguage through what is called Authentic Street interviews. Sowhenever we think about language learning and the first thing that POPsto our mind, is probably just a traditional language textbook listeningto recordings over and over again in a...

...very high quality and recording studio, typeof recording but easy languages takes it to the next level. So they would goon to the streets in the target language speaking countries, and theywould actually interview random people on the street and ask them differentquestions on different topics. There is a specific topic in eachepisode and actually there are also different levels. So I remember listening to easy German, easyFrench when I was learning German and French and they really make it so easyfor you to choose. First of all, what level you are and then a topics thatyou're interested in learning about and what I love about easy languages isalso that there's a variety of languages you can choose from rangingfrom European languages that Asian...

...languages, the languages of LatinAmerica and African languages. So no matter what language you arelearning easy languages is a good yout channel is an excellent yuture channel, actually for you to explore. So if you're learning some of theselanguages, you know the language is to mention above from the four continents.Definitely you should check out the channel, and I also especially like thespontaneity and the CLOCA expressions that I learned by watching easylanguages and this kind of spontaneous language and natural interaction withstrangers who are not necessarily language teachers, so they don'tactually modify their speech in order to suit your years, and this is areally good listening practice and also speaking practice, because you learncolloqual expressions if you speak, one...

...of the languages mentioned above, butyou're currently learning English. You might also want to explore the channela little bit because most of the videos have two closed captions, so you havethe close caption for the target language say if you speak French, butyou are a complete beginner and learning English. You can then go on tothe website and watch the videos, the easy French videos oreasy English videos. Then you can learn the relevant languages that you'relearning. So the aim of the easy languages seriesis that you can improve your understanding of the connections anddream force, positive transfer between your firstlanguage and your second language. Another very powerful website, I'd liketo recommend in this podcast is called...

...ward lap or put the link in thedescretion below and so wart lap is, as I said, a very powerful website. What it does is. It contains youtchannels in all forty seven major languages. So as of April twenty twenty one, thereare a hundred and forty ch, Hannes for learning, English, six hundred andninety eight channels for learning, Spanish and six hundred and fifty twochannels for loaning, French and four hundred and sixteen channels forlearning German, just to name a few of the languages that are featured on theword lab website. So the website itself not only collects all these language learningdoute channels. It takes it further because it gives you the title of theChannel. A short description of the...

...channel as well, but is also allowsallows you to download your web browser extensions, chrome, extensions to be more specific, okay and so by downloading. The chromeextensions which is free- you can add language, you can add dol language, subtitles, pop up dictionaries, precise video playback controls to your Yutuvideos, which makes language learning so much better. So I've tried it theother day really liked the idea. So basically you download the extension. Then it's activated and you pick one of the channels and you can see exactly the percentage of close captions each channel has so I picked one thathas ninety percent closed captions, meaning that ninety percent of thevideos on that particular channel...

...is available for language learning. SoI watch the video turn on word lap and then I see two language subtitles. Soon the top I see the language subtitles in Spanish and the bottom will have thelanguage subtitles in English. So I can easily compare and contrast thetranslations of these two languages as the outur sort of talks about aparticular topic. What is also quite useful is that thereis pop up dictionary so without having to you know, use a traditionaldictionary or even using a online dictionary where you have to open up awebsite type in the ward and go through the meanings one by one for word lap-and you remember the subtitles I talkedabout earlier. You can actually click on individual words or phrases in thesesubtitles and will pop up the...

...dictionary meaning automatically. So you don'teven have to type the letters in the words in order to look up certain words,so that saves saves you so much time when you are quickly expanding yourvocabulary. Another quite interesting feature is that it allows you to havevideo playback precisely so, there's a few keyboard shortcuts. You can just press and then it will rewindreplay, stop and start, and so it really makes everything so much easier and to make your vocabulary learningeven better. You can actually color code. Some of these words some of thenew words that you're learning and then you can incorporate them into yourvocabulary, lists later on. If you are an intermediate or advancelearner who are looking for authentic listeningmaterials, you should definitely take a...

...look at ward lab if you're a beginner-and I still would suggest that you go to the word lab website- have a look atthe range of videos that they have and pick one video, but pick one channeland watch one of the videos, maybe it's too fast or too complicated. But youcan definitely take your time because there is a built in to within Warlabahto make your learning much much easier and saves you a lots of time. I.
